Should your new shed include insulation? Our answer is most probably yes. Why wait until you've potentially had to start replacing expensive electrical tools and supplies that have been damaged and corroded by damp and mould to think about how adding insulation would have been a better option. A worthy initial investment that will save you money and hassle in the long run.
What is an insulated shed?
A garden shed is a small standalone structure, usually in your back garden, that has a robust, watertight roof. An insulated garden shed is exactly this, and a little bit more! The structure includes additional insulating materials in the walls, roof, and flooring. It provides extra protection to the items you'd like to store inside, or if it's going to be your new workshop it means the temperature will be much more bearable in warmer and colder months.
Why have an insulated shed?
It is always going to be better to have an insulated shed over an uninsulated one. To put it simply, the main reason is to regulate temperature and protect the valuables you have stored inside from damp and mould. If you're looking for a simple storage shed, an unlined shed is likely to be fine for you, but if you have any special equipment you wish to store, or you're planning a year-round workshop, we would recommend having your shed insulated. With our insulated sheds, we will also line the inside to finish off the look, using either oak faced ply or solid pine horizontal match boarding.
The benefits of an insulated shed
Temperature Regulation
You may or may not be planning on spending much time in your new insulated shed but at least it will be a pleasant temperature if you choose to do so, all year round. It's also important to consider what you're storing in your shed and if it's sensitive to changes in temperature i.e. any paint, which is recommended to be stored between 10 and 30 degrees for it not to spoil.
Prevents Damp & Mould
A problem plagued by many…damp and mould can wreak havoc in your shed, making your tools go rusty, and ultimately damaging the shed itself reducing its lifespan. Along with ensuring your shed has a good base, and isn't situated too close to hedges or trees, having your shed insulated will help to reduce the possibility of damp and mould taking hold. As part of our insulating process we add a breathable membrane between the cladding and the studwork before we fill any cavities with insulation. The combination of these materials helps to reduce the moisture getting in from outside, meaning you won't need to worry about your gardening or DIY tools becoming ruined or potentially your power source becoming a fire hazard from short circuits and faulty electrical connections.
Versatile & Functional
Most sheds are purchased with the sole purpose of storing things in them, but you never know when the occasion might arise that you need to use it for something else. Perhaps you start a new hobby requiring a posh shed or have always dreamed of a fancy potting shed. Choosing an insulated garden shed from the get go means there are more uses for the space if you need it without the hassle of adding insulation further down the line.
Garden Sheds - Lined & Insulated
Our shed features & considerations
Partitions & Workbenches
Get the insulated garden shed of your dreams by adding a partition and/or a workbench! Perfect for making sure your shed remains tidy and inviting, adding a partition will allow you to separate your storage space from your workshop. Including these in your design on our online configurator means that once your new insulated shed has been installed you'll be ready to move straight in.
Electric Pack
Having a power source in your insulated shed might be considered a must have, especially if it's to double up as a workshop for you! We offer an electric pack extra which will install tube lighting, 4 double sockets, 1 external double socket, and 1 8-way consumer unit to your insulated shed. Not only will you have decent lighting but you'll be able to plug in a heater, a radio, your hobby tools, and whatever else you need to create the best shed ever. Although we can have everything ready to go with electricity inside your shed, we aren't able to connect this to your home power supply. You will need to get a qualified electrician to run the electric from your home to your insulated shed and connect it up for you.
Heavy Duty Flooring
All of our insulated sheds will come with an extremely high quality ex19mm tongue and groove flooring which in most cases will be perfectly adequate for the sheds intended purpose. However, if you have a ride-on lawn mower or other heavier tools and equipment that you would want to store in your insulated shed, or you suspect it will be used daily as a workshop, then we would strongly recommend our heavy duty flooring. Made from the same high quality timber but twice as thick at ex38mm, this will be able to bear heavy loads and prevent damage to your flooring over time.
Window Bars & Security Lock
Insulated garden sheds might be great at fighting off damp and mould, but when it comes to thieves their security is lacking! Bikes, chainsaws, and power tools are high ticket items on a thief's shopping list, but rest assured that any valuables kept in your Crane Garden Building insulated shed is more than safe! We offer a three-step security pack that includes stainless steel security screws used to reinforce hinges which are your sheds weakest security spot, a 7-lever security lock, and 13mm steel window bars.

FAQs
Insulated garden sheds offer superior temperature control, making them suitable for year-round use. They provide better protection for items vulnerable to temperature fluctuations and can be comfortably used as workshops, hobby rooms, or offices in all weather conditions.
We insulate our garden sheds by adding a breathable membrane between the studwork in the walls as well as rockwool insulation being trapped in the cavity between the outer wall and the inside lining. As many of us know, the majority of heat is lost through the roof of a building. Our insulated garden rooms have a 4-tier lining and insulation process that helps to contain heat inside the building, this includes the roofing material you choose, the ply layer, the insulation board that fills the cavity between the ply layer and the next layer which is the internal pine matchboard tongue and groove lining. The floor is insulated in the same way.
Maintenance for insulated garden sheds is similar to standard sheds. We recommend regularly sweeping any leaves and debris from the roof to prevent it decaying and eating away at your roof material, and giving it a brush down and wipe over once a year. The same goes for the window frames as the paint protects the timber underneath, any dirt and debris can break down the external paint and eat away at the timber. Regularly inspect the shed for any wear or damage, and ensure that doors and windows are sealed properly to maintain insulation effectiveness. All of the above will ensure your shed looks as good as the day you got it for years to come.
