The number of people working from home has risen significantly during 2020, with the ONS (Office of National Statistics) reporting that 49% of the UK workforce has worked remotely at some point during the last few months. With many people taking up temporary residence on their dining room tables or in spare rooms, there has been a demand in people seeking a long-term solution for homeworking: many employers are finding that it is yielding positive results, and there is a good chance that, for many of us, working from home will continue even when the pandemic is over.
We’ve recently introduced a new building to our range, the Classic Office, so we thought we would show you how to make the most of the space inside and give you some home décor inspiration to make it your own.
Who is it for?
When looking into buying a garden building for a home office, you will need to think about how many of you will need to use it and what size it will need to be. Will it be just you or will you be sharing it with someone else? You will also need to consider whether you need space to accommodate clients. Our Classic Office measures 2.4 x 3.0m, meaning it is just the right size for one or two people to work comfortably inside. You can configure the layout of your Classic Office to easily fit a desk and a filing cabinet for one person, a desk and a chair or sofa to host you and a client, or two desks and chairs for two people to work simultaneously.
When will you use it?
If you are looking for a home office space, the chances are you will use it all year round, so it needs to be suitable for use throughout every season. Our Classic Office is fully lined, insulated, and double glazed, so it will remain warm inside even in the winter months. It is also comfortable inside during the summer as it has a top-hinged opening window and a set of double doors which will allow air to freely move through the building.
Where do you need your desk?
There are many ways you can lay out your office to make sure you have enough room for everything you need. One of the most important things is where you will sit and do your day-to-day work, so you should start by deciding where you should put your desk. You could opt for a corner desk in front of the windows so you can look out to your garden while you work. If you put a desk against the wall in the opposite corner, you will be able to make the most out of the natural light coming in from the window and doors. Do you prefer your desk to be the prominent feature in the room? If so, you could choose to have it stand pride of place in the middle of your office.
What about storage?
Next, you will need to think about whether you need some storage. Perhaps you’re a professor who needs to refer to academic texts, an accountant who needs somewhere to store client’s receipts or a physiologist who needs easy access to patient records; whatever your profession it is likely you still need some kind of storage unit. You can add a shelf for books, a floor-to-ceiling case for box files, or if you need to store many different items, you could choose a corner filing cabinet to maximise your space.
How will you decorate?
Now comes the fun part, how will you decorate? You may want something quite masculine with dark wood furniture and posters on the walls or something more feminine with light coloured furniture and decorative trinkets. You could match the aesthetic of the Classic Office with modern furniture or you could opt for something more traditional to match the natural looking pine lining. Depending on your preferences, you could choose a more fuss-free home office with only the essentials like a desk chair, laptop and lamp, or if you like somewhere to feel really homely, you can make it more welcoming with pictures on the walls, a rug on the floor and lots of pot plants.
Thinking about the décor of your Classic Office starts before it is even installed, as you will need to choose an exterior paint colour for your building. There are five different shades to choose from and each will add a splash of colour.
Our Classic Office is modern in style with a sleek pent roof and a stylish design including sloping “cheeks” on each side and a top-hinged window.
